Hafen: Aqaba
Zielgebiet: Asien & Naher Osten

On this full-day excursion, you’ll have the opportunity to explore both Petra, the ancient Nabataean caravan-city ideally situated between the Red and Dead Seas, and Wadi Rum, a nature lover's paradise.

Inhabited since prehistoric times, this area was an important crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and Syria-Phoenicia. The Nabataeans transformed the forbidding desert into a bustling metropolis with magnificent buildings carved directly into the rose-hued sandstone hills. Camel caravans passed through, loaded with spices, textiles and incense from distant regions, and the city of Petra flourished, until a massive earthquake left the structures of Petra in ruins.

You’ll travel deep within the desert for approximately two hours, to Wadi Musa, the gateway to Petra. Upon arrival, walk to the impressive entrance to Petra, a narrow gorge formed from a deep split in the sandstone rocks. Your first view is of its most elaborate ruin and achievement, the Treasury. Used as a backdrop in the movie, Indian Jones and the Last Crusade, enjoy time to explore the Treasury and the Outer Siq, leading to immense tombs, facades and doorways.

Enjoy a late buffet style lunch at a local hotel. Transfer to yorur off-road vehicles and begin a journey through the starkly beautiful Wadi Rum, with its sheer granite and sandstone cliffs, and uniquely shaped mountains. The stunning scenery, of the towering cliffs, ancient riverbeds and mauve-colored stretches of sand will amaze you, as you drive through the desert, en route to a Bedouin camp. Upon arrival, indulge in a buffet dinner served under Bedouin tents before your return to Aqaba and your ship.

Note: The Petra portion of this tour involves a strenuous 5 miles walk into and out of the site, along a gently sloping path of compacted sand and gravel. The Wadi Rum portion requires approximately 1 1/2-hours of desert driving in simple older vehicles that have no air-conditioning or seat belts and are owned and operated by the local Bedouins.

Vehicles follow a leader caravan style and there is no narration during the drive. Your guide will provide commentary during stops. Not recommended for guests with neck, back or hip problems as well as physical limitations or pregnant women. Temperatures in the desert vary and we suggest you layer, including a light jacket or wind breaker.

DAY 1 After an early breakfast, depart the pier in Mumbai, formerly Bombay and drive in buses through the city en route to the airport. With a population exceeding 18 million, this one time group of low lying mud flats is now India’s economic power base and her most industrialized city, bustling with activity of incredible diversity and complexity, her color and elegance, her wealth corresponding with her historic struggle against poverty. Certain affluent areas give Bombay an air of mini–Manhattan! The most admirable features of Bombay’s cityscape are the Gothic revival buildings raised in the last century after its original fortifications were removed. Indeed it is because of these buildings that Bombay is often cited as a `unique Victorian city’.

Bags are transported in a separate van to the airport for a pre check-in.

On arrival at the airport, guests receive boarding passes and proceed through security before boarding the flight to Delhi. Refreshments and snacks are served `aloft’.

On arrival into Delhi, buses take us on a scenic drive to Agra via the new Yamuna Expressway with vistas of India’s vast rural farming countryside. (Packed lunch boxes with soft drinks are distributed on the bus).

Agra, the city of Taj Mahal was one of the grand cities of South Asia. With the arrival of the Mughals in 1526 led by Babur, Agra entered a completely new era during the reign of emperors Akbar, Jehangir and Shah Jahan. Akbar made it a great center for learning, art, commerce and culture. Its cosmopolitan bazaars and its strategic location on the river Jamuna, was altogether a worthier setting for the focus of an empire.

Arrive Agra and check-in to the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel.

Following some leisure time, enjoy the classical dance form of Kathak in the ballroom, along with soft drinks & mineral water. A buffet dinner follows the dance performance.

This Mughal Court dance arose from the fusion of Hindu and Muslim cultures during the Mughal era, characterized by rhythmic footwork, spectacular spins, mime and gestures that are a dramatic representation of themes from Persian poetry synthesized with Hindu mythology.

Overnight in Agra.

DAY 2 Discover the monumental Taj Mahal at dawn. Tea, Coffee, juices and rolls are served in the lobby, prior to our departure.

The Taj Mahal, with its incredible lacy white grandeur is perhaps the most perfect architectural monument in the world. In memory of his wife, the great Mughal emperor Shah Jehan planned this most extravagant and incomparable monument built for love. Amazingly graceful from any angle, it is the close up detail, which is really astounding.

Return to the hotel for breakfast.

Morning options

A) 10:00 – 12:30 p.m. Visit the Agra Fort, a World Heritage Site credited to Emperor Akbar, India’s great visionary. His sons and theirs added to this imposing structure situated by the banks of the Yamuna River. The astonishing palaces, mosques and audience halls contained within its massive walls of red sandstone became once more a monumental mission of the Mughal Empire embellished by the artistic fusion of Islamic and Hindu tradition.

B) 10:00–12:30 pm Visit the Tomb of Itmad-Ud-Daulah in the old city, the first Mughal structure pioneering the extensive use of `pietra dura’, the inlay work of marble, so characteristic of the Taj Mahal. This mausoleum is small and squat when compared to the Taj, but the more human scale has its own attraction, and the skillfully patterned surface of the tomb is exquisite.

Lunch is on `your own’.

Afternoon options A) 2:00 pm – 4:00 p.m. Visit the Tomb of Itmad-Ud-Daulah in the old city. B) 2:00 pm (hourly) Shopping shuttle to the Marble inlay factory and local markets. C) 2:00 pm– 4:00 pm Agra’s leading astrologer will be available for consultation. Appointments for an analysis of your personal horoscope can be made at the Norwegian hospitality desk.

Revisit the Taj Mahal at sunset, the monument appears to change its hue, tinted by the glow of the setting sun.

Dinner is at the hotel with mineral water and soft drinks.

Overnight in Agra.

DAY 3 An early call for the flight to Mangalore which makes a stop at Bangalore. After coffee/tea, croissant and juices, transfer to Delhi airport, collect boarding passes and proceed through security and then onto the plane. (Packed breakfast is provided on the bus).

Lunch is served `aloft’.

Upon arrival in Mangalore, transfer to the pier. (A separate van is provided for transportation of the baggage to the pier).

Arrive at the pier and reboard the `Norwegian Star’. Ship sails later in the evening.

Note: What to Bring: As the Taj Mahal is also a mausoleum; certain religious customs must be observed. As a token of respect, it is customary to remove your footwear before entering. Ladies should avoid wearing tank tops or any top with spaghetti straps as well as short shorts. Knee-length shorts are acceptable for men and women.

Documents and Visa Requirements: It is essential to have a valid Indian Visa for the trip. The Visa is not included in this package and guests are responsible to secure the proper documents in advance for this excursion.

Luggage information: On internal flights, check-in bag not to weigh more than 15kg (33 lbs) and the carry-ons are max of 7 kgs (15 lbs). However, arrangements will be made for the baggage to be transported along with the passengers.

This city of many facets that enjoys its status as a commercial capital by day transforms itself from a flourishing center of commerce and trade into a dazzling entertainment center when the sun sets and the lights come on.

As dusk falls, you'll leave the pier and find yourself in the sparkling after-dark ambience of this intriguing city. You’ll make a visit to the Regal Cinema Hall, Bombay's first art deco theater, where you’ll have a short viewing of a typical Hindi film. Nicknamed Bollywood, the city's film industry actually produces more movies per year than Hollywood.

Drive past the impressive gothic style buildings of the High Court, the Art District of Kala Ghoda, Victoria Terminus, the Center of Science and the landmark Gateway of India at Apollo Blunder - Illuminated at night each of these notable sights seems to take on a distinctive and perhaps more captivating character than is seen during the day.

Bombay's nightlife is characterized by its countless restaurants, street-side cafés, bars and private clubs. It is in one of these venues that you’ll have the opportunity to meet some local 'Bombayites' while relaxing and enjoying drinks and dinner. The cuisine combined with the easy-going and friendly natures of your local hosts makes for a truly memorable experience. Rejoin your coach and travel down Marine Drive with the curved shape of the bay being accented by thousands of sparkling lights and make a stop at a local night market. You'll have time to stroll amongst the stalls and shop for silks and jewelry while enjoying the aroma of exotic spices.
